Betel nut (areca catechu) is the seed of the betel palm tree. This palm tree can grow up to 20 meters and has leaves up to 1 meter long.

It is one of the most popular plants in the world, according to the WHO, it is the fourth most used psychoactive substance in the world, only after nicotine, alcohol and caffeine. Its leaves are made into paper for rolling tobacco and herbs.
Betel nut is chewed with burnt calcium and sometimes with other herbs. There are millions of Asians who appreciate their daily dose of betel nut as much as Europeans appreciate their cup of tea.
Regular use of betel nut discolors the mouth and teeth bright red. Asian betel nut chewers are very proud of these stains.

    Effects

Betel nut is a stimulant. The activating substance, arecoline, has a stimulating effect on the central nervous system, improves learning and reasoning abilities, facilitates breathing, improves the disposition and reduces the heart pressure. It gives a feeling of euphoria and has aphrodisiac qualities.

Betel chewing causes a joyful relaxation and a pleasant sensation in the mouth, which goes all the way to the brain, and is a pleasant pastime.

    Usage

You can take a teaspoon of betel nut tea in powdered form, with water, or mixed in coffee. You get the maximum effect if you mix the seed with calcium and chew for some time. The mixed saliva and calcium stimulate the activating substance. This is absorbed, through the mouth, into the blood. The chewed saliva and residues can be spat out after some time. To improve the taste you can eat lemon pieces together or sprinkle the powder with lemon juice.
Never use more than 3 grams at a time and more than 6 grams per day.
The nuts are hard, but in Asia the nuts are chewed whole, often mixed with various spices and packed in plant leaves. The remains are spit out. You can mix betel nut with kola nut.
