SALVIA DIVINORUM

Salvia divinorum, also called "ska pastora", "ska María", "hierba María", "herb of the gods", ancestral herb of visionary characteristics used by shamans for divination by the Mazatec people, in Oaxaca (Mexico).

The active ingredient of Salviadivinorum is the so-called salvinoria-A, which causes strong hallucinations.

Mechanism of action

It was believed that salvinorin-A does not act through any of the known neurotransmitters. It has been said that its molecule is not actually hallucinogenic but onirogenic; that is, it triggers the brain mechanism that changes the state of wakefulness to the state of sleep, but retains the state of consciousness (the so-called "conscious sleep").

It has recently been found to be a potent agonist of kappa opioid receptors (which produce spinal analgesia, miosis and sedation) and has no action on serotonergic 5-HT2A, the main molecular mechanism responsible for the actions of classical hallucinogens. These studies suggest an important role of kappa receptors in the modulation of human perception and a new therapeutic avenue for the treatment of pathologies related to perceptual distortions such as schizophrenia, dementia and bipolar disorders.

Forms of use

The leaves of Salvia divinorum have traditionally been administered orally, in infusions or chewed. In Europe it has recently been adopted the modality of drying Salvia divinorum leaves or making very powerful extracts and smoking them in bongs or water pipes lit with blowtorch-style lighters, since salvinorin-A has a very high vaporization temperature, so smoking it in a conventional cigar or pipe with the fire of a conventional lighter does not do much good. If the fresh leaves are chewed, their effects begin 30 minutes after ingestion and last for a little over an hour. If smoked dried or in extract, they begin to take effect after 30 seconds and decline a few minutes later. However, salvinorin-A is not considered a drug because it does not contain any addictive ingredient, so in some countries it is still absolutely legal.

If smoked, less than half a gram of leaves is usually used, which is equivalent to 1 or 2 puffs. In the case of extracts, all are usually extremely potent (use with caution), as pure salvinorin-A is one of the most potent active ingredients; it is only comparable to LSD, as it is active at 20 micrograms and above. The lethal amount has not yet been determined, however, doses close to or greater than 2 milligrams can be highly dangerous.

If consumed for the first time, it is advisable to consume a 5x extract, as 10x, 15x and 20x can catapult the user into a state out of reality within seconds, into a world of visions and experiences that they may not be ready to experience. A dose of 5x is a low dose that will cause great distortions of vision and a feeling as if the skin is being held or pulled, but will always maintain the awareness of the world and reality to which one is accustomed. With a medium dose the user is "absent" from reality, for a few minutes hypnotized by the images seen by his mind; or it is also possible that the user bursts into laughter and moves like a drunk; it may be that after this the psychonaut enters a state of terror that does not last more than a few minutes. A high dose of salvinorin-A, between 15x and 20x will completely destroy the consumer's space-time concept for long minutes, in a prepared and comfortable environment, the trip may be constructive and remembered as something very special for the rest of life; it may become an experience of self-exploration. Failure to prepare the proper environment can result in a bad trip of major proportions, leaving the psychonaut insecure and frightened for weeks at a time.

Psychological and physiological effects

Salvinorin-A has dramatic and intense psychoactive effects, quite different from those of other psychedelics. Recent experiments with salvinorin-A have shown diverse results ranging from alarming intensity and terror to very pleasant introspective experiences. The effects of salvinorin-A are very sensitive to light and sound stimulation. Its psychoactive properties can only be experienced in the dark and in silence, contrary to serotonergic hallucinogens. About its physiological effects, it is only known to cause a decrease in body temperature, blood pressure, and sweating. A slight headache may occur the day after administration. There are no studies on prolonged consumption. Some subjects report experiences when it is administered smoked in which their mind is abstracted, unable to recognize the reality around them, with inability to speak, and even losing the sense of reality, but for a short period of time that can reach a maximum of 2 or 3 minutes.
