The Psilocybe cyanescens is a sister species of Psilocybe azurescens, also noted as one of the psilocybe mushrooms more potent. As azurescens is a strain for cultivation outdoors and requires a substrate of wood shavings.

During winter, the culture was initiated by inoculating sterilized rye cover. Once it is completely colonized rye is used as spawn to inoculate a larger amount of sterilized wood shavings. In spring, the wood chips are used to inoculate colonized more non-sterile wood chips outdoors. Fruits can be expected in the fall.
