Historically, Mucuna has been used as an aphrodisiac. It is still used to increase libido throughout the world, due to its dopamine-inducing properties, which has a profound influence on genital function.

It also contains dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and diethyltryptamine (DET), two potent entheogens.

Mucuna pruriens is a tropical legume of the Fabaceae family, known by grano de terciopelo, pica, picapica, frijol terciopelo, chiporazo, chiporro, ojo de buey, ojo de venado, fogaraté, kapikachu, nescafe, grano del mar, kratzbohnen, konch, yerepe (Yoruba), atmagupta. It is an annual plant, climbing shrub with long tendrils that allow it to reach more than 15 m.

Its berries are white, lavender, or purple; flowers and pods covered with orange hairs, causing severe swelling and allergy if in contact with the skin. The grains are black or shiny brown. Found in tropical Africa, India, Caribbean.

Mucuna pruriens seed powder contains high concentrations of levodopa, a direct precursor of the neurotransmitter dopamine and long used in traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine for diseases such as Parkinson's disease. In large amounts (30 g/dose) it has been shown to be equally effective in the treatment of Parkinson's as pure levodopa/carbidopa medication, but there is no data on long-term efficacy and tolerability[Another benefit of Mucuna is that it can increase human growth hormone production, with its extracts commonly sold as a restorative. It also has diuretic effects, increases tissue resilience and improves coordination.
